The journey started at oh-dark-hundred (05:00 AM) in Atrani on the Amalfi coast of southwestern Italy. Both of my alarms, the one on my phone and the little travel alarm that Catherine and her bunch gave me, went off within minutes of each other. It felt like I had just gone to sleep a few minutes earlier. It was still pitch black in my little closet sized room at the A'Scalinatella hostel. Luckily in had enough sense to pack everything up the night before because I wasn't moving very quickly this morning.
I found it interesting that my last stop in Western Europe was also one of the most fun places I visited. It wasn't that Athens was such a terrific place but the Athens Backpacker Hostel was outstanding. The staff, the people, the tours, and the location all added up to a make for a truly remarkable experience. I knew that I was going to have a great time the evening that I arrived. I was dead tired after spending the previous 34-hours traveling coast to coast through two countries (Italy and Greece). After a short nap I ventured up to the rooftop bar just as the sun was setting. The hostel occupies a four-story building right in the middle of the tourist section of Athens. What I didn't realize until I ventured up to the roof was that the hostel is only a couple of miles from the Acropolis. From the rooftop bar there is an awesome view of the Acropolis that looks even better at night when it is brightly lit. What an incredible sight that was.
