Okay, here is a story that would probably qualify for a “Believe It or Not” tale. As some of you may have read in my earlier posts, I ran into another Rick Steves travel advisor fan on the flight from Boston to Lisbon. Liz was on her way to visit Portugal and Spain with her son Mathew. Since we were sitting next to each other on the plane for 9 hours or so we had the opportunity to compare notes about places to see and things to do during our travels.

In And Around Nice

Another night train and I leave Spain behind and travel on to the French Riviera. I had planned on stopping in Marseille but once again I couldn’t get reservations. A lesson that I have learned the hard way is that hostels are extremely popular here during the summer and they book up quickly. So I skipped Marseille and went directly to Nice France. The sleeper trains are definitely the way to do long distances. It’s terrific to go to bed and wake up at your destination. Arriving first thing in the morning also makes finding the hostel and getting oriented in a new town so much easier.

I met up with a group of Aussie's and American's and we are all going to Monte Carlo for the evening. Should be fun to see the town all lit up at night.

Train, Nice to Lyon

I've got to get further ahead on my train reservations. I got stuck on the Regional trains because the TGV (high speed trains) are booked. Found out a little bit of news. SNCF (French train services) only allow a certain number of Eurail Pass holders on each train. In other words, Eurail is basically a ripoff anymore. They charge you a booking fee, make you stand in long lines to make reservations, and limit when you can travel. DON'T USE EURAIL !!!

Glorious Paris

Paris, wow…

I have to admit that Paris is one of the few cities so far that not only lives up to its reputation but also exceeds it by a large margin. Paris is an incredible city with something new and wonderful around every corner. I was in Paris for eight days and it wasn’t nearly enough. There is so much to see there that I could have spent my entire 90 days in Paris and still not see everything.
